6 Tips for Safe RVing with Pets

Taking your pets on your RV travels can be fun and rewarding for both you and them. To make the most of your trip, it’s important to plan appropriately and ensure they’re happy and healthy on the road. If you’re one of 54 percent of RV owners who travel with pets, use these tips to be sure the trip is fun and safe for the whole family.

Six Tips for Safe RVing with Pets

1. Pack Enough Food

If your pets’ typical food isn’t available at all of your destinations, you might have to switch brands mid-trip, which can be hard on their digestive systems. Be sure to pack enough food for the whole trip — especially if you’re going somewhere off the beaten path for a while — in order to avoid any potential problems. Consider using plastic bins so their food stays fresh, and keep their feeding schedules regular so you can plan stops (and potty breaks) accordingly.

2. Bring Copies of Pet Health Records

Changes in climate and altitude while traveling can lead to allergies and illness. Keep copies of your pet’s medical records and vaccine certifications in your RV in case you have to stop by a clinic or vet’s office while on the road. If your pet is on medication, be sure to get enough for the whole trip from your vet before you take off.

3. Have a Routine on the Road

You and your pet have a routine at home: when you leave home and come back, when it’s time to eat or play, and when it’s time for bed. That routine can be hard to stick to on the road, but your pet is counting on it. Create a new routine for when you are on the road in order to mediate their stress levels. Also keep the things they use regularly — crates, beds, food and water — in the same place so they can acclimate to their new home and know where they can rest and recharge.

4. Be Prepared for Escapes

While adjusting to their new surrounding, your pets might build up the courage to venture out on their own and could get lost. This can be scary for both you and your pet. Be sure to have them microchipped before you take off, and put a tag on their collar with his or her name and your cell phone number in case they wander off.

5. Watch for Bugs

Traveling to new locations and exploring the outdoors can mean your pet will come in contact with new critters, including fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and other bugs that could carry diseases. Be sure your pets are up-to-date on their flea and tick medications, bring enough for the road and, after a long day outside, do a quick scan to check for bites, redness and rashes.

6. Make Time to Play

Long days on the road can mean your pets are confined to a smaller space for a long period of time. Be sure to make time to play. Depending on your pet and breed, that might be just 30 minutes a day, or it could be several hours. Either way, the exercise will help them stay happy and healthy. Don’t forget to pack plenty of toys to keep their paws busy during downtime.
